Playoff Predictions

By Ryan McNeill

While thinking of ways to cover the NBA playoffs this week inspiration struck – why not send out a mass email to all of my basketball contacts and get their thoughts on the upcoming NBA playoffs? This plan worked to perfection as I received feedback from 34 fellow basketball addicts and over 120 emails were exchanged to create this post. I’m grateful to all the writers who participated in this by providing me with some great answers to the questions I sent out.

For this Playoffs Predictions posts you’ll see responses from:

Some of my favourite responses came from Chris Young who wrote an autobiography on Vince Carter but ripped Carter in one of his answers, Jared from Both Teams Played Hard picked Eva Longoria when asked to name what player he thought would grab the limelight this spring (I knew I should have worded that question better) and Steve Hofstetter provided the best asnwer when picking a low seed capable of an opening round upset when he picked New Jersey and explained by saying “Sure, they’ll lose, but that will upset their fans.”

Because of the strong feedback and amazing responses to the questions I emailed out to everyone I elected to not break the results down into boring data and graphs and instead decided to post all of the responses in their entirety for you to read through. Enjoy!

Chris Young from The Toronto Star

1.What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
Man, I wish it was the Magic. I cant sit through 10 minutes of the Pistons. Kill them, please, and break out the garlic and the cross and slay the Dark Lord Pat Riley while you’re at it, Bulls. But I still don’t see either of them losing. I don’t think any lower seeds have much of a chance. They mostly don’t, historically, though I reckon most people will be calling the Nets for this question, but I’ll say Denver. Iverson, Anthony, Camby and George Karl have found the right meds lately. The Spurs, my pick to win it all this year (which means that this will never happen) are old and wearing out and cannot match up on anything but the Eva factor.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Suns are healthy and hungry. Mavs are smarting. So it’s Suns-Mavs. Now there’s going out on a limb.

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
I’m not really impressed with the Bulls puke job on the final night of the season. But I’m staying with them, even if Ben Wallace is the most overrated free agent since Belinda Stronach. They’ve got Luol Deng and that’s good enough for me. Bulls vs Cavs in the East final.

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
Phoenix. And if you don’t think so, ABC will cram it down your throat till you cry uncle.

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement is status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab he limelight this spring?
Good question, Ryan. Given the Joey Crawford fiasco, I?ll say Benny Salvatore. Going out on a limb again there. Failing that, I’m got a feeling we’ll soon find out what song Zydrunas Ilgauskas thinks about when he’s at the free-throw line.

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
Ryan, you’re from Toronto or at least, close enough. This is a Mitch Williams fastball to Joe Carter. Do I have to spell it out for you? Okay, his initials are VC.

Marcel Mutoni from Slam Magazine and NBA Fanhouse
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
Lakers. I don’t know why, but I feel as though last year’s 3-1 lead against Phoenix wasn’t a fluke. That, or this is the Laker fan in me speaking.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Spurs vs. Mavs

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Cavs vs. Pistons

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
Mavs

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
Carmelo

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
Shaq

Dan Steinberg from The Washington Post’s “DC Sports BOG”
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
Well, the Bulls, of course, but that shouldn’t really count. So I’ll take the Nets to beat the Raptors.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Suns-Mavs, naturally

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Nets-Pistons

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
Mavs

5.  Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
Josh Howard. I know he already has plenty of limelight, but I’d say no more than Wade did at this point last year.

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
Bonzi Wells. Would he actually get a ring?

Steve Hofstetter from National Lampoon’s Sports Minute Or So
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
The New Jersey Nets. Sure, they’ll lose, but that will upset their fans.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Dallas v. San Antonio. Texas wins.

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Detroit v. Cleveland. It’s the Eastern Conference, nobody wins.

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
Dallas. Mainly so Mark Cuban can shut it.

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
Steve Nash. The most underrated two-time MVP in the league.

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
Isiah Thomas.

Golden St. Warriors

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Houston Rockets vs. San Antonio Spurs

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Chicago Bulls vs. Detroit Pistons

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?

Luol Deng

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
That’s mean, man. Kobe.

Brian from Empty The Bench
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
The Warriors are rolling, and Don Nelson would love to beat his former team. I have the Mavs making the Finals, but if Golden State plays their best game every game, you never know…

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs, though the Spurs only get there because Joey Crawford isn’t around to punch out Tim Duncan.

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors. If this does indeed happen, I will accept any and all bets/wagers from one Ryan McNeill of HoopsAddict.

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
Detroit Pistons. I can hear the “Homer! Homer! Homer!” chants already.

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
Perhaps inspired by Pantera, Chris Bosh has taken his game to a new level of confidence and power this season. Though he’s already on the cusp of becoming a household name even to casual NBA followers, there’s still a lot of folks out there who aren’t privy to this wunderkid. That’s going to change after he gets all nutty on the Nets and Cavaliers in the first two
rounds.

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
All the players that come to mind are on the same team, so I’ll take the Miami Heat, including their head coach.

Jeff Clark from CelticsBlog.com
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
Well, both number 5 seeds could be favored against the number 4’s they are playing so that’s not much of an upset. I don’t put a lot of stock in the “Nellie owns the Mavs” notion and I wouldn’t count on any of the big 3 out West falling. I’d love to pick the Wiz, but they’re freefalling. I’ll go with the Nets beating the Raps because I think Jason Kidd has a little left in the tank. Oops, did I just say tank? Will someone tell David Stern to stop calling me. Its your system buddy, you fix it.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
I’ll take the safe bet with Mavs vs. Suns. Of course the final outcome will have to be decided between Marcus Banks and Eric Dampier because Dirk and Nash will try to drink each other under the table the night before game 7 and show up for the game in their robes with ice packs sitting on their heads.

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Cavs and Pistons. I just think this is the year LeBron breaks through and makes it to the finals. With any luck the series will be decided by a Chris Webber time out technical. Now I know I picked the Raps to lose in the first round, but if they went to the finals and played the Spurs, we should take a picture of the starting lineups and post it on the wall at the UN. World Peace promoted through roundball.

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
Mavs. Dirk paid his dues and won’t let that team lose again. There are just too many things going for them to lose it now. LeBron will need a better supporting cast to take his first ring (probably next year when he has Bibby).

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
LeBron and Dirk are the easy answers, but I’ll go with Chris Bosh. Again, I’m contradicting my first round upset pick, but this isn’t March Madness, there will be no first round upsets. Bosh is the motor of that team and they can make some real noise in these playoffs. Besides, if I make enough contradictory picks, I’ll be able to point to at least one of them and say “see, I was right about that!” If not Bosh, I’ll go with Tracy McGrady as my second choice. Or maybe Luol Deng. Or perhaps Melo. Can I answer after the 2nd round? I give up, I’ll just pick Paul Pierce for next year’s playoffs and retire back to my cave of bitterness and apathy.

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
Can we retroactively go back and take rings away from Kobe? Even if Boozer doesn’t earn a ring, he might sneak up and steal one from a blind guy. I’d be worried about Vince Carter winning, but then I remember that NBA champs usually have heart. Can I really only pick one? By the way, I was actually quite happy for ‘Toine. It wasn’t exactly like seeing Ray Bourque win one on another team, but I always loved the big goof. I still do the Walker Wiggle from time to time, just for fun. That’s how I roll.

Enjoy the playoffs everyone. Wake me up on May 22nd.

Jared Wade from Both Teams Played Hard
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
I was gonna hold of until we find out if NJ will be the 6 or 7…but realized they got a better shot against either Chicago or Toronto than any of these other squads. Check Kidd and Vince’s numbers from April. Vince is damn near 50/40/90 on his percentages and Kidd is putting up Oscar numbers. Meanwhile, RJ is shooting 45% from distance. And if they do play Chicago, they have the best two players on the court, which is always nice.

Could happen…probably not. But no one else is winning except maybe Houston, and only pansies would pick a 5-seed as an “upset.”

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Dallas and Saint Antoine

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Miami and the LeBron’s

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
San Antonio (over Miami)

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
Eva Longoria

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
Andres Nocioni

Austin Kent from HoopsAddict.com
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
As much as I hate to say this, and hope that I’m wrong, the New Jersey Nets seem to be the front runner to stage an upset. It was either that or the Chicago Bulls, but I don’t see Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O’Neal giving up that early. I think that the Raptors have the potential to win the series, and are still the favourites to do so, but it’s going to take a lot more than an Atlantic Division crown to convince Raps fans that their team is ready to go deep in the playoffs.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Neither the Warriors, Rockets or Jazz will be able to contend with the Dallas Mavericks in the first two rounds, so you can pencil the Mavs in already. It’s not as clear with the rest of the conference though. Call me insane but I think that any one of the remaining four teams could potentially win the west this year. The Suns, for obvious reasons, and the Spurs because… well… they haven’t won since 2005. Where it gets interesting is with Denver and LA. Allen Iverson and Kobe Bryant are two of the best and most passionate basketball players in the league, just think, are there any two players in the league who can will their team to win single handedly like AI and Kobe can? Be sure to take into consideration that Iverson now gets the chance to run alongside Carmelo Anthony and Marcus Camby, and Kobe’s recent quest to dominate the record books. But I suppose I can’t continue to avoid this question. The Dallas Mavericks will face the winner of the Nuggets and Spurs series. My brain tells me that will be San Antonio, but I’m going to go out on a limb say that Denver will take it. Denver and Dallas, final answer.

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
This one is tricky because I feel the three top teams to beat in the conference are Detroit, Chicago and Miami. Since the Bulls and Heat are squaring off in the first round, that eliminates one of them right there, and with that winner then facing the Detroit Pistons (assuming they beat Orlando) in the Conference Semis, we’ll see two of the best three teams in the East sitting at home before the ECFs even begin. From the lower half of the bracket I can only see the Cavs coming through. The Wizards are dead without Gilbert Arenas, but both the Raptors and Nets could potentially give Cleveland a run for their money. That being said I can’t see LeBron James losing in the second round again, it’s not his destiny, Detroit and Cleveland will meet in the Eastern Conference Finals. I know it’s the number one seed versus the number two seed, I’m boring. Get over it.

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
The Dallas Mavericks seem, from a glance, to be the clear cut favourite to win this year, especially since I already recklessly knocked Phoenix and San Antonio out of the final four in favour of the Nuggets, but I’m not sure if I that’s going to happen. What I am going to say is the Mavs will put an end Denver’s miracle run in the WCFs and the Cavaliers will put up a valiant effort against the Detroit Pistons, but the ‘Stons will ultimately wrestle the trophy away from Dirk and the Mavs in the NBA finals, leading fans to once again question the big Germans heart (unnecessarily) and Mark Cuban to
post an angry blog.

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
Nobody is doubting the talent of these two players, but what I hope to see from this year’s playoffs is Ben Gordon and Deron Williams getting some recognition for their All-Star calibre contributions to their teams. Unfortunately both could very likely be out of the playoffs after the first round. I also think Andrea Bargnani will convince fans league-wide, as
opposed to just in Canada, that he is worthy of the first overall pick in last year’s draft, and that TJ Ford will prove he is one of the better point guard’s in the NBA. With all of that being said, the player that I can see benefiting the most from these playoffs is Carmelo Anthony. Here is a chance for the 22-year old Anthony to shed the NBA whipping boy image and force
fans to respect him as a legit young superstar.

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
The depressing thing for me is that Antoine Walker was, and is, one of the few Heat players I actually don’t mind. I am not sure if I hate the Heat because I hate their players, or vice-versa but if they win another ring I will not be a happy camper. Besides the state of Florida has been at the top of the basketball world for long enough.

Tom Minear from HoopsAddict.com
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
In the west, I would fancy Houston to beat Utah, and would also say that Golden State could come out and beat Dallas in the first round. In the east, I would back the Cavaliers to beat the Heat, and maybe the Nets could knock off the Raptors, but not likely.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
The Western Conference finalists will be Phoenix and Dallas.

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
The Eastern Conference finalists will be Chicago and Cleveland.

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
Phoenix will defeat Chicago and be crowned NBA Champions.

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
There are a lot of young players ready to explode in the playoffs. I think Monta Ellis will be very good against Dallas, but not good enough to beat them. Chris Bosh will become a top-flight superstar (if people don’t think he is already), and so will Luol Deng. Leandro Barbosa will be the young player to get the most attention, as one of the most dangerous players on the Phoenix roster.

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
It’s hard to say that I don’t want to see someone win a championship – maybe someone like Chris Webber, who was lucky to land at Detroit after a few horrible years in Philly. However, I would definitely love to see Nash, Dirk or LeBron win their first NBA rings.

Seth Rosenthal from Posting and Toasting
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
The Nuggets over the Spurs. (That’s 99% hopeful, 1% logical).

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Dallas and Phoenix

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Detroit and Toronto

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?

Yao Ming

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
Vincent. Lamar. Carter. If he gets a ring, I might go live in a cave.

Justin Poulin from Celtics Stuff Live
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
No disrespect, but whatever team faces the Raptors has the best chance to upset. The Atlantic division is still the weakest in basketball and while that may not be true much longer it remains a fact this season and thus a prime suspect for an upset.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Phoenix and Dallas

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Wizards and Bulls

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
Dallas

Antoine Walker..Again

Matt Kolsky from Hoops Addict Podcast and Serious Sports Network
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
Outside of the 5 seeds, both of which have a decent chance, I think it’s Golden State

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Dallas and San Antonio

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Cleveland and Detroit

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
San Antonio

Tony Parker

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
Vince Carter – not that he has a chance. And I like Antoine.

Jon Burkett from Passion and Pride
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
Hard to say. In both conferences, the 5th seed has the better record over the 4 and will retain the home court advantage. Neither would be considered an upset. As long as the Lakers have Kobe Bryant, they always have a chance. The same can’t be said of all the other 6-8 seeds.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Dallas and Phoenix

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Detroit and Toronto

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
Dallas Mavericks

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
The more I think about it, the more I like Bosh as the breakout performer of the playoffs. You know he’ll take Mikki Moore to school and Drew Gooden doesn’t play a lick of defense. Bosh will average 29-13.

Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
YES- Chris Webber. It would send the wrong message that bitching and moaning about your situation leads to getting what you want. Something about that #84 jersey reminds me of Randy Moss in a Vikings uniform.

Brian Lucas from Phoenix Suns Rising
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
Warriors over Mavericks. The Warriors have absolutely OWNED the Mavs this year and in recent years. Nelly knows Dirk inside and out, including every one of his weaknesses.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Mavs vs Suns – The REAL finals.

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Pistons vs Bulls – The Bulls have the talent to win it all but will Skiles screw it up? Yup.

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
SUNS, of course.

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
Kobe Bryant – Which the Suns will efficiently dispatch of and make sure that doesn’t happen.

Nobody

Hype from NBA Basketball and Other Unrelatedness
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
The insane pick: Warriors over Mavs, only because Nellie’s in this, and when Nellie’s involved in the playoffs, trust no one. Rather sane pick: Nets over Raptors, only because Jason Kidd has a playoff tested tenure whereas most of the young pups of the Raps are going in for their first time (I doubt it though, for what it’s worth)

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Suns vs. Mavericks, it’s destined

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Pistons vs. Cavaliers, its….*yawn*….zzzz

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
Mavericks. If they somehow mess this up, or if another “ref job” is in effect… I wouldn’t step into the NBA Offices if I were David Stern…

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
Christopher Weston Bosh. If he’s able to pull an Arenas and drop another podcast in the middle of the playoffs, then world, please meet Mr. Bosh

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
Andres Nocioni, someone need to clothesline him for all the crap he pulls.

Wes Cox from MavsMoneyball
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
There is no other answer but the Rockets. It’s so obvious that I feel I’m cheating the question by picking them.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Dallas and San Antonio – a rematch of last years actual Western Conference Finals

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Detroit and Cleveland – I’m not sold on this idea that Miami will miraculously get it together in the playoffs.

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
Superstition will not allow me to answer this question

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
Chris Bosh will actually be on national TV. I’d pick Dwight Howard if his team had a chance of advancing.

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
Tracy McGrady – He got on my **** list for the way he forced himself out of Orlando

Tom from Indy Cornrows
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
Sorry Raps fans but I think the Nets have the best chance to advance. They’ve been playing well of late and I was expecting the to win from the 7 spot. Now that they are a 6 seed I still think their experience will surface at crunch time and be the difference in the series. This is all assuming that the basketball gods don’t render Vince Carter useless against his former team.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
I have to go with the Spurs and Mavericks in the Western Conference Finals. Regardless of who plays, the journey to the Western Conference Finals should be absorbed and appreciated one game at a time.

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
I like the Nets and Pistons to get to the Eastern Conference Finals. The Pisons have earned their rightful place atop the East, but their road to the Finals will challenge the championship mettle.

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
I’ve been leaning toward the Spurs and with the recent dust up between Tim Duncan and Joey Crawford I now feel like they will refocus after the distraction as a stronger team and end up hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
It is hard to see any young guys going too far through the playoffs but Yao Ming could raise the Rockets to new heights by raising his game.

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
First of all, Antoine winning was a plus for me, but I understand that’s not a majority opinion. As for this year, I have developed a healthy respect for the Pistons and truly think they can take down any of the teams in the West. The only bummer would be Chris Webber winning the title.

Ryan McNeill from HoopsAddict.com
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
I’m going to go with Golden State pulling off the biggest upset in NBA history! I can’t stand Dirk, JET and Howard so I could be biased here but the fact that Golden State swept Dallas this season and have won five of the last six meetings between these clubs is enough to sway me. Besides, did you really think I could mention my beloved Raptors here?

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
San Antonio and Houston

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Toronto and Detroit

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
San Antonio (I’m sticking with the pick that I made on NBA XL earlier this month).

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
TJ Ford

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?

I’d hate to see Walker win another Championship…

Jason Gurney from BallHype.com
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
Strictly speaking, the Rockets probably have the best chance of any “lower seed,” but I’ll go out on a limb and pick the Warriors to shock the world.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Suns vs. Rockets

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Pistons vs. Cavaliers

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
Suns

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
Amare Stoudemire

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
Vince Carter. The Raptors must eliminate the Nets.

1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
The Rockets: It might sound cheesy picking a 5 seed to beat a 4 seed as an “upset”.
New Jersey is a close second, but I just don’t believe in the Nets. The Rockets were hurt earlier this year and they seem to be playing pretty well… so they have a good chance to make some noise.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Spurs and Mavericks: The Suns are a fun and exciting team to watch… but there’s a reason
why they’re not an NBA Champion: running teams don’t do well in the playoffs. The NBA playoffs are a grind. There are no more uncontested layups and dunks. It becomes a halfcourt game. The Suns can do well enough to make things very difficult for the Spurs… but the Spurs are built for the playoffs. The Mavs have quietly transitioned from a pure runinng team to a team that can succeed in the half court as well. Besides, their road to the finals (Warriors & Rockets/Jazz) is much easier.

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Cavaliers & Pistons: The Arenas and Butler injuries effectively made the first round matchup a walkover for Cleveland. Then they’ll get to beat up on an Atlantic division team. The only way Cleveland’s road could be easier is if they threw a college team in there. Detroit’s road is much tougher… but they should be able to dispatch a very young Orlando team. Then they’ll probably take on the Heat… but I doubt Dwayne Wade is healthy enough to take over quite like he has in the past.

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
San Antonio: Like I said… they’re built for the playoffs… and Tim Duncan probably feels a little energized by the whole Joey Crawford mess. Dallas is a VERY close second choice for this answer… but I’ve thought all along that San Antonio was going to win… and I’m not backing off of that now.

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
Chris Bosh is probably the best player flying under the radar right now. He can dominate the Nets… and if the Raps can give the Cavs a fight… then Chris Bosh will stand the most to gain. When you talk about the great young big men, Chris Bosh is right there with Dwight Howard and Al Jefferson as a guy who can be an All Star for the rest of his career. Howard is too young to dominate this year… so the spotlight is Bosh’s for the taking.

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
VINCE CARTER! Carter is a fraud with a ton of talent. He coasts way too often… he oversells “injuries”… and he only plays hard when he personally stands to gain something. Isn’t it funny that he suddenly went on a triple double binge at the end of an opt-out year? And I can’t count how many times he’s hit the floor… gotten up limping and grimacing like he’s been shot… then one play later he’s throwing down a 360 dunk. I can’t stand him.

Brian Taylor from HoopsAddict.com
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
I think the Rockets would have the best chance to pull off a first round “upset”, if you can call a 5 over a 4 an upset. The combo of Ming, McGrady and playoff experience is going to be a bit much for the improved but inexperienced Jazz. Jerry Sloan has been there, and the only guy with any deep playoff experience is Okur.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Looking into B Teezy’s crystal ball, barring injuries, lightning bolts and earthquakes, I see two best friends, one from Canada, the other from Germany, duking it out in the West.

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
As much as I hate to say it, the team looking at ‘Sheed and Rip in the ECFs will be….*sigh*…..King James and Company.

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
At the rate they’ve gone this year, and with the chemistry they have with Avery Johnson, I can’t see anyone really keeping the Dallas Mavericks from the crown. If I had said this phrase 14 years ago, you all would’ve had me committed.

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
I see a few guys taking over the spotlight, Devin Harris, Dwight Howard in the first round and Monta Ellis.

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
VINCE ABSOLUTELY CANNOT WIN!! I WILL PROTEST THE NBA IF HE DOES! Oh yeah….and LeBron James.

1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
Golden State and Chicago – although we realize that the Bulls are hardly a lower seed.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Phoenix and Dallas

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Detroit and Toronto

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
Deron Williams and Andrea Bargnani. If the Warriors pull the upset Monta Ellis.

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
Lots to choose from here but we’d say Vince Carter, Kobe Bryant, Damon Jones and the entire Heat squad in that order. PS – is it 12:30 on Saturday yet?

1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
The Denver Nuggets, or course! They have the stars, the hunger, and the momentum. Too bad we can’t bank on Joey Crawford. Beware of the evil Steve Javie!

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
I feel that the Dallas Mavericks and the Denver Nuggets are on a collision course for Western Conference Supremacy.

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
The Detroit Pistons are the safest pick, but as for their opposition, I’m going with the dark horse pick of the Toronto Raptors.

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
The Dallas Mavericks.

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
Carmelo Anthony is the Western Conference Player of the Month for April so you had better keep your eye on him. Especially if your name is Greg Popovich!

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
While I think their chances are slim, I definitely do not want to see LeBron James win a ring. After the year the Cavs have had it would just kill me to see Cleveland win it. Long live Larry Nance.

Dennis Velasco from Sports Illustrated and About.com
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
The dudes from The Swamp, the New Jersey Nets. I think they’re going to get all Chris Multosanti on the Raptors’ Tony Soprano, but instead of it being fake like a movie, the cleaver will be a real blow when the Kidd, VC, and RJ take out the Raptors. Sorry, Toronto, but if you had Jorge Garbajosa and Andrea Bargnani, you would easily win.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
The Mavericks will do fine with the pressure of being the defending Western champions and face the other team from Texas, the San Antonio Spurs. It’ll be high noon when these teams meets, except you know, they can potentially have seven high noons, which would be great for the fans.

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
The Pistons and the Cavs. This could be LeBron James’ Michael Jordan moment… but will he? See number 5 for my thoughts.

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
The San Antonio Spurs because I said so.

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
LeBron WILL step up his game and lead the Cavs over the Pistons to make it into the Finals. Crazy? Sure… but so was Wade’s game last season. Why can’t LBJ get psycho on some car parts?

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
I bear no ill will towards any player because I’m a nice guy. HOWEVER, being a long time Knicks fan, if the Pacers were in the playoffs I would say Larry Bird, simply because I think Karma is a bitch and she hates beak noses with moustaches under them.

Unfortunately I will have to say either the Nets over the Raps or Lakers over the Suns. Utah also has a chance to beat Houston

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Either Dallas vs Suns or Dallas vs Lakers (if lakers knock off suns their headed to the western conference finals)

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Either Bulls vs Heat , Det vs Heat , Raps vs Det , Raps vs Heat… something like this.

1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
1) Houston (5th seed — lame, I know, but it’s a lower seed isn’t it?) over Utah (“chances” aside — this is what I think will happen)
2) Chicago over Miami (think it will happen)
3) New Jersey over Toronto (contract year + Toronto = VC could care; veterans; I actually like Toronto better against the Cavs if they make it to the second round)
4) Los Angeles over Phoenix (don’t think it will happen)

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns (who really need to fix that San Antonio problem)

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
Whoever really has their heart set on losing the NBA Finals and is willing to work for it. [Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors]

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
Phoenix Suns

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
Grabbing the limelight requires soaking in the limelight and that takes time in the form of multiple rounds of play. First round exits for Bosh or T-Mac (not a young player) won’t get it done. If the Suns go all the way this year, it’ll be because of Nash, and Nash will have “arrived” in all senses.

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
I don’t care who wins it if TNT can cover it, bad calls don’t take center stage, and we see great basketball. And I’d also like to avoid the dirty feeling I got last year when someone who wasn’t Stan Van Gundy won.

Nels from GiveMeTheRock.com
1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
I’m going to have to go with the Bulls and Rockets here. Both shouldn’t be lower seeds anyway, though, so I don’t know if that really counts. I’d say the Nets probably have a good chance, but everything else will probably go according to seeding.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
I think it will probably be about LeBron this year. The Cavs should get to the Conference Finals easily which will put him on a larger stage. If the Cavs can find a way to beat Detroit, the Finals will be all about LeBron. Sorry, Dirk.

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?

1.What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
Well, since we cant really count the Bulls and Rockets as lower seeds considering they had better regular seasons than their opponents, I believe Vince Carter and the New Jersey Nets have the potential to upset an inexperienced Toronto Raptors team.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
I wish I could go off the board with this one, but Dallas and Phoenix have been the two best teams in the league all year long. Newly crowned MVP Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavs win this one in 6.

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
I hate to be a homer, but I am picking the Bulls fight off the defending champions in Round 1 and upset the hated Pistons in Round two before falling to the well-rested Cavaliers.

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
Dallas in five. This one won’t be close.

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
Everyone seems to be on the Tracy McGrady bandwagon, which is fine, because I’m jumping on it as well, but T-Mac is more a case of a Top 10 player who got lost in the LeBron/Wade/Dirk/Kobe hyperbole of last season than he is a rising young star. Amare Stoudemire is an intriguing choice, although I feel Stoudemire had his breakout when he owned Tim Duncan in 2005. So, not to go homer on everyone again, but for some reason I see Ben Gordon shooting the lights out for the next month as he takes Chicago to the Eastern Conference Finals.

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?
LeBron James. While the NBA would love to see King James finally take a seat on the NBA throne, I just cant get behind a guy who, so far this season, has all but admitted to trying to get his coach fired, taken the first 40 games off and made plans to build a mansion larger than most cities.

1. What lower seed has the best chance of pulling off a first round upset?
(8) Golden State Warriors over the (1) Dallas Mavericks- 10 reasons why an upset is very possible.

2. What two teams will play in the Western Conference Finals?
(8) Golden State Warriors vs (2) Phoenix Suns- The return of 150 point games is back! The only thing faster than the Suns’ style of play is Warrior tempo. However, the Warriors and their surreal run will catch up to them. Phoenix in 6.

3. What two teams will play in the Eastern Conference Finals?
(4) Heat vs (6) Nets- It’s really amazing how easy the Nets have it. The Raptors have had a great season, but they’re not 2nd round material yet. Who really knows what type of Cavs team will show up in the 2nd round? The Nets should be able to draw from their veteran savvy to make a nice little run. On the other hand the Heat are going to have an extremely tough road going through the Bulls and Pistons. Thank god for the Heat the refs are on their side. Heat in 6.

4. What team will be crowned NBA Champs?
Miami Heat vs Phoenix Suns- Get ready to bust out the Sunny Delight on a fine June evening. This is going to be a fun NBA Finals that tops even last year’s. Suns in 7.

5. Last spring Dwyane Wade used the Heat’s run to the playoffs to cement his status as one of the NBA’s top young players. Who do you think will grab the limelight this spring?
Monta Ellis- He might not have the best stat lines (those turnovers are an eyesore), but he is going to dazzle audiences all over the globe with his uncanny speed and ups. Warrior fans have been blessed to watch this kid play all season long and now the rest of the league will get a chance to see more Ellis to the Rim just as they did in the Rook-Soph game.

6. Last year a lot of basketball fans let out a collective groan when Antoine Walker shimmied his way to a Championship. Is there a player this year who you don’t want to see win a Championship?

  1. Pretty stupid and disrespectful last question. Nice to see some people have some class with their answer. It’s obvious some of you just have no class (bitter Celtics fans mostly)

  2. I think the question is very fair. The people surveyed are huge basketball fans which means they each have at least one favorite player. In addition to that, they’ll each have at least one player or team they dislike, whatever the reason may be. It’s just a natural result of being a passionate fan.

  3. Thanks Sonia! I was thinking of ways to answer that comment from FDA and you did a great job of explaining why that questions was included in the survey. I wanted to chance to “vent” about Vince Carter and it appears that other writers have a player or two that get under their skin as well.

I’m sorry if I offended any readers with the last question.

  4. Nice job with this. An enjoyable read, at the worst. If only there was some more love for the Jazz…

My answers (for fun… so that people can come make fun of me when I screw up all of them)…
1- The Bulls, though 4/5 isn’t really an upset. So I’ll go with the Warriors, because everyone loves the big under-dogs. (I’d go with the Jazz, who are the 4*-seed but huge underdogs, but the question specifically says “lower seed”.)
    2- Mavs and Suns
    3- Pistons and Raptors
4- The Suns, led by 3-time back-to-back-to-back MVP Steve Nash
5- The NBA’s sad excuse for referees
6- Kobe, Wade, Webber, anyone playing the Jazz… oh so many. 🙂
