Andrew “Socks” Bynum

February 28, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Did you know that Andrew Bynum earned the nickname “Socks” this season because he wore his socks in the shower? According to reports coming out of Los Angeles, Bynum wouldn’t go into the shower barefoot so instead he wore socks into the shower.

The kid has recently bought a pair of sandals for the shower but I have a feeling that nickname will stick around for a long time…

Should High School Kids Go Straight To The NBA?

February 26, 2006 · 2 Comments

I’ve long been an advocate of students going to college for a year to enjoy playing video games, watching ESPN and ordering pizza until late at night. I love my time at university and I feel that everyone should get that opportunity (especially when a school is willing to pay for that). Why wouldn’t athletes take this opportunity to enjoy their youth for a couple more years before basketball becomes corrupted by agents and greed?

Brian McCormick wrote a great column today that’s starting to change my opinion. In his column he wrote, “Why force a kid into college? If he was not a basketball player, he would not go to college; he would join the Army, go to a junior college, get a job with UPS, etc. Going to college is not for everyone; why force every prospective college basketball player to attend college? Why not have USC give its scholarship and $100,000 education to a student-athlete who intends to stay more than one year and might benefit from the education?”

McCormick makes a couple other strong points but finished his article with this gem, “Let Davon Jefferson enter the draft; heck, encourage him. If he is not good enough to play in the NBA next season, send him to the NBDL; after all, that’s what the NBDL is for: development. There is no need for such an apathetic student to masquerade as a student-athlete just to further his basketball career. Universities should not serve as a minor league and abdicate its responsibilities to educate; the NBA, through the NBDL, should accept and train Jefferson and similar non-student athletes.”

Cheap Wine, Popeye’s Fried Chicken and Skinny Dipping

February 14, 2006 · 2 Comments

Want to know how to woo a girl on Valentine’s Day? Talk to your boy Delonte West to get some tips. In a recent ESPN article West says that he’ll start off a date on “my yacht. We’ll pull up at the docks and got a guy waiting for us, open our door up and we walk down a lit-up dock and onto the yacht, where we have dinner set up on the boat and we just cruise out on the water. Sit down and have some dinner, some shrimps and steaks, keep it nice and breezy. Pop some bottles, some Moet Rose. The red Moet, we ain’t popping no Kristal, it tastes like urination. We ain’t popping no Kris, that’s $500 a bottle. It ain’t that serious. It ain’t going to get you drunk. Make sure you put that in there. We ain’t doing a $500 bottle, we’re doing a $99 wine and dine.” The charm keeps oozing out of West when he talks about the post dinner plans.”So, we are done eating, man, we’ve got to have someone singing while we’re eating. OK, so from there, we’re doing a midnight skinny-dipping jump. Alright? From there, hopefully she’s got money because I hope Jaws gets her, boom, make sure she got me in the will, bank, I’m good. Oh well, shark got her! Jaws got her.” Between demanding his date wear a white dress, cheap wine, Popeye’s fried chicken and skinny dipping what girl wouldn’t die for the chance to have a date with West?
